New to Ender 5 Pro and Firmware problems

2020.09.15 05:34 Thiago_Rangel7 New to Ender 5 Pro and Firmware problems

Good evening
I just bought an Ender 5 Pro and I still wasn't able to print anything. When I turn my machine on, it shows "TMC CONNECTION ERROR". I've read that this is a firmware error and that I need to update it, but I don't know how to and I can't find any beginner friendly guides. Can someone help me please?
When I navigate to "About printer" menu, it shows "Marlin - Ver 0.0.8 - 2020-04-25", so I think it's a pretty old version (since I've read that Marlin is already at version 2.0.x), although the date isn't that old.
I looked for the firmware file in Creality's website, but I only found the following files:
All of them seem to be for BLTouch, which I don't have in my machine. Where can I find the official firmware file for non-BLTouch machines?
Also, I don't know if I have a 8bit or a 32 bit board. How can I check it?
I'd also like to know what is TMC2225 (written on first filename above).
And the last set of questions: what is Th3d firmware? From what I could understand, it seems to be a custom firmware. What are the advantages of using it? Is it better than the official Creality ones? Are there other custom firmwares? Should I consider flashing a custom firmware instead of the Creality one?

(EEMC) Hyac's Mod List: Entry 2, NPC Appearance Overhauls & "Black Face Bug" Real Talk

Reviewer's Specs: i5-4460 @ 3.2GHz Radeon R9 280 w/ 3GB VRAM 8GB of DDR3 RAM Logitech G602 & MK320

Introduction - TL;DR

Let's talk about the "best" NPC Appearance mods! After that, let's talk about the most obnoxious but easily correctable bug you'll encounter in modded Skyrim: the dreaded "black face" bug.

Introduction

Last week's mod list was for mods I use to make the vanilla game's side quests a more enjoyable experience. This time, we're going to look at the mods I've chosen to make my game's NPCs look a little less like blobs and more like people, and why I chose those mods over other options available.
I'm also going to try and tackle the creation of a basic, entry-level walkthrough of the so-called "black face" bug: what causes it, how to fix it when it comes up, and even how to prevent it from happening in the first place -- all without using the Creation Kit!

Have you had work done?

Since this list won't directly edit every single NPC in the game, we need a solid base to build on. Cathedral Player and NPC Overhaul gives us the best base we could ever hope for. Instead of editing NPC records directly, Cathedral's NPC overhaul collects assets from dozens of some of the community's best mods and combines them to replace almost every NPC-related mesh and texture file in the game. This alone makes every single character in the game look drastically better than they do in the base game, and because it doesn't include any edits to the NPC records themselves it does so with incredibly few to zero compatibility issues.
If you're just looking for a general improvement to every character in the game without worrying about plugins and NPC records then Cathedral Player and NPC Overhaul is absolutely the mod you want. There are alternatives out there, some of them pretty popular; but in my humble opinion those alternatives are dated and nowhere near as complete, polished, or compatible as Cathedral.
From here I use a very specific set of NPC mods to edit NPCs directly. My personal goal with this list isn't to make characters look "better". I'm not particularly interested in my NPCs looking more attractive, or more like modern people; my goal is to make characters look less like they've been procedurally generated, and more distinct -- both in general and from each other.
  • I start this process with Enhanced Men of Skyrim, formerly Spiced Vanilla NPCs (which, for the record, I think was a better name), by saberlynx. It covers 70-odd NPCs, all of them male. Instead of taking a generic "make them better looking" approach, EMOS attempts to reconcile character appearances with their story and position while going to great effort to maintain the original vanilla aesthetic of each character.
  • Next comes the "Refine" series, by DylanJamesWasTaken. This author has covered almost 170 characters in his series, most of them spread between Whiterun and Markarth holds. The remaining characters are either Housecarls or directly involved in the Stormcloak rebellion story. Much like the other mods here, this series avoids diverging too drastically from the game's basic design. That means it compliments EMOS very nicely, and I'm very excited to see it continue.
  • I want to make a special note about the Housecarls Refine module. This one goes a little further in its edits than just their appearance: each of the housecarls now has more distinct equipment, and bestows their own unique perk when they travel with you based on the city they serve and the housecarl's individual personality and capabilities. It's a sadly under-explored aspect of follower mods, but I'm torn on it. On the one hand, I'd love to see every follower in the game get this kind of attention and expansion... but on the other I'd hate to see the series shift to just followers at the expense of a Riften Hold Refine, for example.
  • Now I'll admit that part of the reason I continue to use this last suite is habit -- I've been using it since the Oldrim days, and just can't get used to other versions of some of its characters. But there's a reason for that: even after all this time, Bijin NPCs, Bijin Wives, and Bijin Warmaidens by rxkx22 are still second to none in striking a balance between attractiveness and realism in the too-few characters it touches (which between the three of them is 45 female NPCs). I had a legitimate crush on Bijin's version of Ysolda for the better part of a year, and no other mod has ever felt right for her since. This one breaks away a bit from my target of "Vanilla Plus"... but what can I say? I'm a complicated person.
That's it. That's my chosen suite of NPC appearance mods. But that short collection hardly justifies being called a "mod list", even a mini one. So I'd also like to talk about the other NPC mods I've used and what I liked about them. The reason I no longer use them is the same for each of them: the Refine Series is more extensive, and I wanted to avoid the time and effort of combining too many different appearance mods in one go.
  • Northbourne NPCs of Whiterun and Falkreath by Southpawe are an exceptionally designed pair of mods. They go deep, covering every unique NPC in their respective holds. They're just a hair too far away from the "Vanilla Plus" design I'm personally aiming for currently, though. And I mean this literally -- the faces are great, but the hairs bump me a little with one or two of them being just ever so slightly too clean and salon-ready for my taste.
  • If you're looking to be impressed everywhere you turn at just how attractive the people of Skyrim are, then Pandorable is the author you want to see. Her work on NPCs from the base game covers 85 female NPCs, so it works perfectly alongside Enhanced Men of Skyrim. Her Dawnguard and Dragonborn modules are less gender-specific, covering (as near as I can tell) every unique NPC introduced by those DLCs. They're not the style I'm aiming for with my current load order, but they are head and shoulders above anything else I've ever used for the beautification of Skyrim's characters.

Won't somebody please think of the children?!

So, real talk time: Skyrim's kids are ugly. And boring. And ugly. Like potatoes with limbs. You look at a child in Skyrim, and you just know there's literally no way a single one of them could possibly "grow up" to look like any adult Skyrim NPC. I fear for Skyrim's future, when it comes to be ruled by this new race of potato-sapiens. So what mods do I use to fix it?
  • Well, for the longest time I used RS Children Overhaul. It was the mod for child NPCs in the Oldrim days, and is still the most highly endorsed mod when you search "children" on the Nexus. But in my humble opinion RS takes the problem I noted with vanilla children -- that they could never possibly grow up to look like adult NPCs -- and overcompensates. They look much better... but they still don't look like they could ever grow up to look like their parents.
  • The mod I use for children is Simple Children, which absolutely lives up to its name. It works in much the same way as the Cathedral NPCs overhaul: by replacing the assets the game uses to "build" the characters in-game rather than editing their appearance manually. Children are now more expressive and individualised, and more importantly actually look like people.

Summary

Strengths:
  • The fact that these mods combine to cover so many NPCs, added to the fact that they're designed with a "vanilla friendly" aesthetic, leads to a consistent and immersive experience across the province.
  • The perks given to the player for bringing the housecarls along with them is a mechanic I'm stunned we haven't seen more often in Skyrim modding. It's so simple and elegant an improvement that it feels like it should have been part of the base game all along -- and that's the best kind of mod, if you ask me.
Opportunities:
  • Being packed into BSA archives is a mixed bag in my opinion. In general modding practise, assets should almost always be packed into archives if possible, especially for larger mods; but this can lead to compatibility issues for users who don't know how to extract and overwrite them, which is a more common practice for NPC mods than others. I'll discuss this a little more later on.
  • While I deeply appreciate the perk system being implemented by the newest chapter of the Refine series and am excited to see it continue in future entries, I hope the author doesn't leave the rest of the game's characters behind to focus on followers alone.
Performance:
  • There are no performance notes for this one -- if you can run the vanilla game, you shouldn't notice an impact with any or even all of these mods installed. My specs are included in the article header. They're decidedly mid-range.
Conflicts:
  • Due to the way that NPC edits are contained within a single record for each NPC, any mod that makes any edits to any of the affected NPCs will conflict. Fixing such conflicts with NPC records was my first step personally into a greater understanding of xEdit as a whole, though, and I'd like to take this opportunity to help others resolve the most common and overt of NPC conflicts: the dreaded "black face" bug.
  • The plugin for Simple Children requires a small bit of xEdit cleanup if you're using USSEP (you 100% should be, by the way) to avoid infinite loading screens. A detailed guide to this process can be found here.

Un-Cancel your Skyrim!

Introduction 2: Electric Boogaloo
The "black face" (or "grey face" or "dark face", if you wanna use a term with less baggage in 2020) bug is the most common type of NPC conflict reported here on Reddit or on the Nexus, probably because it's the most readily apparent conflict in-game. It's a hard bug to miss! It's also a problem that lots of newer or less experienced mod users find intimidating to resolve -- I know that was the case for myself, anyway. A lot of the advice commonly given to resolve the issue is either incomplete or intimidatingly technical, and as a result I simply avoided NPC appearance overhauls entirely because they conflicted with far too many other mods I deemed "more practical". It wasn't until I spent some time in xEdit trying to resolve an issue with my beloved Serana that I became comfortable doing the same for other NPCs, and I learned that it's actually not as complicated as it might seem.
For the record, I'm using Mod Organizer 2 and feel that it is by far the superior mod manager for Skyrim. The process described below should be helpful regardless of your mod manager, but the exact actions required may be marginally different. If you're trying to do this without a mod manager, then Stendarr preserve you.
The thing is that at its core, there's only ever one possible cause of the black face bug. Every time, 100% guaranteed: the facegen data for the NPC doesn't match the head part and face morph edits the game is loading from your load order. Now there's some terminology in here that doesn't mean anything to many neophyte mod users, so let's parse those terms and figure this out.
What Does It Mean?!
While there are exceptions, the vast majority of mods that edit an NPCs appearance do so through the use of a plugin. This plugin tells the game what the author wants the NPC's face to look like: the length of their nose, the shape of their eyes, their hairstyle, and every other minute detail of their appearance. These details can be found in xEdit under the Non-Player Character section of the plugin. There will be a record for the edited NPC containing lots of information, not just data controlling their appearance. But their appearance will be dictated by the groups of mesh pieces and numbers under a section called "Head Parts", and everything that follows. Everything before the Head Parts section determines aspects of that NPC other than their appearance: equipment, AI packages, any scripts that may be attached to them, etc.
The information in the plugin is only half of what's needed, though. Just like with a weapon or a piece of armour, the game needs a matching mesh file -- the collection of vertices, edges, and faces that make up a 3D object in a video game -- to display these changes in-game. The shape of this mesh is determined by the numbers contained in the .esp created by the mod author. In Skyrim, meshes are in .NIF format. This mesh also has embedded within the file paths to the skin, scar, etc. textures used for the character too, without which the mesh will display in its bare purple state in-game. Skyrim uses .DDS files for textures. Collectively, these mesh and texture files are referred to as "facegen data".
When the shape of the mesh being loaded by the game doesn't match what the game expects based on the plugin it's using, the NPC shows up in-game with a dark face as the game tries to reconcile conflicting data. This can happen for a few reasons. Maybe the author forgot to include the facegen data their plugin wants. If that's the case, you will need to open the Creation Kit and generate them yourself. More commonly, however, that data is simply being overwritten thanks to the way Skyrim loads assets.
Pack It In, Boys and Girls
There are two ways to package assets for a Skyrim mod. The first is the way that Bethesda uses for the base game, and which is used by larger mods such as Legacy of the Dragonborn or Beyond Skyrim Bruma: in a proprietary archive, similar in principle to a .RAR or .7z archive. The other is more commonly used by smaller mods: as loose files, organised in a specific file structure that mirrors what would appear in a BSA archive. Both forms have their advantages and disadvantages that are beyond the scope of this article, but have been discussed at length all over the internet. I won't go too deep into that here. That's what she said.
Assuming two mods contain conflicting files and are packaged the same way, either install or load order can be used to determine which one's assets will "win" a conflict: if both are using BSA archives, whichever one is loaded last will win; if both are using loose files, whichever mod is installed last will win. But no matter what order you install them or load their plugins, a mod that uses loose files will always overwrite a mod that uses an archive. This is highly relevant for NPC mods since mods in the category seem roughly evenly divided between the two types of packaging.
Time Records Can Be Re-Written
Let's say you want to use both Whiterun Hold Refine and Bijin Wives. The former uses a BSA archive, while the latter uses loose files. There are five combinations of install and load order you can have with this setup, but in every one of them the game will use Bijin's loose file facegen data -- so effectively, install order is irrelevant. That means there are two relevant load orders:
  • You load Bijin Wives after Whiterun Hold Refine. In this case, the game will use Bijin Wives' plugin to decide what conflicting NPCs should look like. Because the game will use Bijin's facegen data no matter what, it will match the plugin being used and you will see no black face bug on conflicting characters.
  • You load Whiterun Hold Refine after Bijin Wives. In this instance, the game will use WHR's plugin information to decide what a character should look like but will use Bijin's facegen data. Because the two don't match, you will see the black face bug on any conflicting NPCs.
Therefore, the easiest way to avoid the black face bug due to conflicts between an appearance mod that uses a BSA and one that uses loose files is to make sure that the loose files mod loads after the archived one. But what if you wanted to use the archived mod's appearance for an NPC instead of the loose files mod? Maybe you like WHR's version of Ysolda better than Bijin's. But loading WHR second doesn't give you the appearance you want, it just gives her a black face!
To accomplish this you'll need to crack open the BSA archive and pull out Ysolda's facegen data, then overwrite the loose files mod with your newly extracted ones. These files are located in meshes/actors/characteFaceGenData/FaceGeom. From here they'll be sorted by whichever plugin the NPC comes from; for characters in the base game, they'll be in a folder named for one of the master files: Skyrim.esm, Dawnguard.esm, Hearthfire.esm, or Dragonborn.esm. Specific facegen meshes are named for the character's base FormID, which you can determine very easily by finding the character in xEdit or by finding their page on UESP. Ysolda's would be 00013BAB.NIF. Don't forget the matching texture file! It has the same name as the mesh, just a different file type. Ysolda's would be 00013BAB.DDS. Find it using the same file path as the mesh, but replace ‘meshes' with ‘textures'.
So now you have the BSA mod loading first, then the loose files mod, and you have a pair of plugin-less loose files that you've installed over the loose files mod's files. You launch the game, find Ysolda… and her face is still all dark and messed up.
Remember, we're loading the loose files mod (Bijin) after the archived one (WHR); so it's using Bijin's plugin, but WHR's facegen data. You need to move WHR's edits after Bijin's without moving the entire plugin; if you do that you'll fix Ysolda, but end up breaking everyone else. The quickest way to do this is to find Ysolda in the NPC section of WHR's plugin, right-click on her, choose "Copy as override into..." and either move this record into your general compatibility patch (ie your Smashed Patch) or create a new plugin for all your NPC edits.
Doing this will now mean that the only mod now editing Ysolda is Whiterun Hold Refine. Any other mod that edits other aspects of Ysolda, like her combat behaviour or her daily routine, will be replaced in-game with your appearance mod and will need to have its records carried forward into your compatibility patch. To do this, look through the entries in Ysolda's record above the Head Parts entry. Compare the information in each column to the column on the far left (Skyrim.esm), to determine which mods are changing which elements of the character. Most of the time, you can safely combine as many non-appearance edits made to a character as you want. But don't try to combine edits from multiple appearance mods, of you'll need to regenerate your facegen files with the Creation Kit.

Summary

The bottom line is that the easiest way to avoid the black face bug from the get-go is to find a simple, uncomplicated list of appearance mods that have as little overlap as possible. I've found the best way of doing this is to choose an author whose work you like and use only their mods.
But with the information provided above you should be able to fairly easily layer multiple NPC mods to get the final result you want, limited only by the amount of time and effort you're willing to put into the process.

Final Thoughts

Have questions about the black face issue that this review doesn't help with? Is there a more comprehensive set of NPC appearance mods out there I haven't tried? Did I miss any mods that work well with the ones I'm using? Please let me know!

2020.08.09 06:21 PrestonPirateKing [fo4] My game is loading forever after installing performance friendly-mods

So I am not used to modding with fallout 4. I haven't played fallout 4 on pc before today, however I am quite experienced at skyrim modding. This is much different because my computer doesn't seem to be able to handle the game as well as I would like. Upon first loading everything was slow and the characters were out of sync so I removed some mods that would cause significant delay like weaponsmith. Currently I just have a bunch of performance mods and a ui mod along with the alternate start mod for the quick start function, I am not entirely sure how to make my performance mods work together as that is what is probably causing the infinite loading as that happened after I installed them.
I have leftover weapon mods and sim settlements as well, if i need to I can remove the weapon mods but I would rather keep sim settlements if possible.
Here is my current mod list:#Mod_Priority,#Mod_Status,#Mod_Name,#Note,#Primary_Category,#Nexus_ID,#Mod_Nexus_URL,#Mod_Version,#Install_Date,#Download_File_Name

2020.08.09 06:19 PrestonPirateKing Fallout 4 keeps loading forever after adding performance enhancing mods

2020.07.27 07:31 kentexcitebot Chrome OS Stable channel got promoted to Chrome OS 84. Here is everything that changed!

All right crew!

The Chrome OS Stable Channel got promoted to milestone 84 last week on Tuesday - from 83.0.4103.119 to 84.0.4147.94. As with every new milestone update, this brings massive changes to the table, offering several new features, bug fixes, and security enhancements to better improve your Chrome OS user experience. In light of the global situation, Google decided to defer the features from Chrome OS 83 to 84. This means this update is packed with major features. Fun fact: exactly 10,000 commits landed in this build of Chrome OS, excluding platform specific updates. Here is everything new I found in this build of Chrome OS!

Like my content and want to buy me a coffee? You can support me on ko-fi using this link or by using the link in my Reddit profile. If you want to be kept up to date with everything new to Chrome OS, feel free to give me a follow. Thanks in advance for your support!! :)

Featured changes

This section showcases changes I believe to be the most significant to this build of Chrome OS. They make a massive impact to the user experience and may be something to look forward to when upgrading your system to this build. These changes will also be listed in the "Notable changes" section of the post.

  1. Ash: You can now snap app windows to the top of the screen to maximize, and unsnap a maximized window by dragging down from the top bar. Small change, HUGE productivity booster. See my demo on Reddit here.
  2. Multi-display overview and snapping windows in clamshell mode is enabled by default. This means you can snap windows in overview mode without needing to go into tablet mode. See screenshot.
  3. Files app: The completely revamped file manager built with Google Material theme and WebUI is enabled by default. This features a nice white theme, outline iconography, and native RAR archive support. This replaces the old files app on Chrome OS. See screenshot.
  4. Linux (Beta): The new Terminal system app that features a cool black theme, tab UI, and new settings page is enabled by default. To find terminal settings, right click the terminal icon on the Shelf. See screenshot.
  5. Linux (Beta): Linux apps can now use your Chromebook’s microphone, which opens the door to multimedia apps such as Audacity. To enable, head to Chrome OS Settings > Linux (Beta), then enable the “Allow Linux to access your microphone” toggle. Chrome OS settings will require you to restart the Linux container to apply changes. See screenshot.
  6. You are now able to resize the disk size of Linux (Beta) out of the box. The setup installer also bakes the disk resize tool in it. By default, the disk size is dynamically allocated, but you can change it to a fixed size if you need more/less space. See screenshots.
  7. Explore app: The brand new Help SWA app, called “Explore”, is enabled by default. It completely overhauls the Help app experience, featuring a slick Google Material theme with nice Google-y illustrations. This app aims to help people get set up and take full advantage of their Chromebook. It also merges perks from buying a Chromebook, like free Google One storage for 12 months (YMMV). See screenshot.

Notable changes in this build

The following is everything I found with this version of Chrome OS. There may be more things I might've missed - please let me know in the comments if you find a significant change not listed here. Bullet points in bold are changes I believe are the most significant.

The nitty-gritty stuff

This advanced section is a long list of things changed that impacts web developers and enterprise users. There are some nitty-gritty stuff in the full changelog linked below, but this list covers the most important Blink and Chrome changes introduced in this release cycle.

Disclaimer: because of how enormous the changes are between Chrome OS 83 and Chrome OS 84, I decided to omit a large amount of blink and v8 changes. However, I made sure to pick the most important blink and v8 changes introduced in this release cycle. That said, this is everything I found with this version of Chrome OS. If you find a mistake, discover something new that's not on this list, or have feedback, feel free to let me know in the comments below.

Platform changes

This part of the list covers the most significant platform changes I found in this build, from platform version 13020.87.0 to 13099.72.0. This includes low level changes, including kernel and driver updates and bug fixes. There are a ton more nitty-gritty stuff between these changes that lives outside of chromium/src. Note: due to the sheer volume of changes in this section, I am likely missing a lot of changes.

Disclaimer: I'm still learning how to read these changes!

2020.07.22 04:45 Maid_Ella Host a Minecraft server on your Android!

A lot of you asked me to explain how to setup a fully working Minecraft (Vanilla/PapeForge/Fabric) server on an Android smartphone. So here is my attempt to explain it as good as possible. ^-^

Step 1 - Setting up Termux:
First we will need to download and install the Termux app from either the PlayStore or on APKPure. It will emulate a Linux terminal for us, that we can work with.
Make sure to at all times, have "ACQUIRE WAKELOCK" activated, to prevent your phone from closing Termux. It can be found at Termux in your phones notification area. Now let's get back into the app.
To make sure our Termux has all the necessary updates, execute the following command inside the terminal:
apt update && apt upgrade -y

Step 2 - Setting up Ubuntu on Termux:
Now that we have Termux up and running, lets continue with installing a Ubuntu Server on it. You can do so by executing the following command inside the terminal:
pkg update -y && pkg install wget curl proot tar -y && wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AndronixApp/AndronixOrigin/masteInstalleUbuntu/ubuntu.sh && chmod +x ubuntu.sh && bash ubuntu.sh
Now that we have installed Ubuntu, we need to boot it up. Do so by executing the following command:
./start-ubuntu.sh
Now we want to make sure our Ubuntu is up-to-date by executing the command:
apt update && apt full-upgrade -y

Step 3 - Setting up Java in Ubuntu:
Minecraft Java edition servers require Java to run, we can install it with the command:
apt install openjdk-8-jre -y
After that let's test if Java is installed successfully and working without Errors. Execute the following command:
java -version
We are looking for something saying "openjdk version "1.8.0\_xxx", the xxx number defines the exact version are can vary, depending on when you do this tutorial. As long as you don't see any errors, everything is working fine.

Step 4 - Preparing the server folder:
Our server will need a place to be, therefore we use the following command to create a new folder:
mkdir server
It will create a folder named "server" for us. We can check if it worked by using the command:
ls
You should be able to see our newly created folder there. Let's navigate into it, so we can continue the setup of our server. You can do so by using the command:
cd serve

Step 5 - Choosing what server software to install:
Now it gets a little more into the details, as we need to choose what server we actually want to make. There are 4 major options to choose from.
  1. Vanilla: The basic Minecraft server, without plugins or mods.
  2. Paper: A better optimized version of the Vanilla server, that allows the use of plugins.
  3. Forge: The basic option used for most mods.
  4. Fabric: A more lightweight option for some mods.

Step 6 - Downloading the server software:
Now that we have chosen our software, we continue by downloading it. Depending on the software you want to use, execute one of the following commands:
For Vanilla:
wget -O server.jar https://launcher.mojang.com/v1/objects/a412fd69db1f81db3f511c1463fd304675244077/server.jar
For Paper:
wget -O server.jar https://papermc.io/api/v1/pape1.16.1/101/download
For Forge:
wget -O forge-installer.jar https://www.dropbox.com/s/70qn2bsto1p72rx/forge-1.16.1-installer.jar?dl=1 && java -jar forge-installer.jar --installServer && mv forge-1.16.1-32.0.71.jar server.jar
For Fabric:
wget -O fabric-server-launcher.properties https://www.dropbox.com/s/iqed4i8883wfdda/fabric-server-launcher.properties?dl=1 && wget -O vanilla-server.jar https://launcher.mojang.com/v1/objects/a412fd69db1f81db3f511c1463fd304675244077/server.jar && wget -O fabric-installer.jar https://maven.fabricmc.net/net/fabricmc/fabric-installe0.6.1.45/fabric-installer-0.6.1.45.jar && java -jar fabric-installer.jar server && mv fabric-server-launch.jar server.jar && mkdir mods && cd mods && wget -O fabric-api-0.15.1+build.380-1.16.1.jar https://www.dropbox.com/s/7itlcr6o45a4i03/fabric-api-0.15.1%2Bbuild.380-1.16.1.jar?dl=1 && cd .. && rm fabric-installer.jar
Step 7 - Configuration:
Now that we have our server software downloaded successfully, we need to prepare a few things. First of all we will need a text file creatoeditor to create/edit both the eula.txt and our server.properties, as well as a few other things later on. To install that execute the following command:
apt install nano -y
Time to create and accept the eula.txt, starting with executing the following command:
nano eula.txt
If you proceed here, you agree to have read, understood and accepted the Minecraft EULA which can be found here! In case you do, enter the following text into the file:
eula=true
Continue by tabbing the little "Ctrl" button below the terminal and tabbing X on your virtual keyboard after that. Now you tab Y and hit the RETURN key, both on your virtual keyboard. What this did was essentially entering shortcuts. Ctrl + X told nano that we are done, Y told it we want to save changes and pressing RETURN approved the default file name.
You can edit the server.properties the exact same way, just use the command:
nano server.properties
You can navigate the cursor around holding the louder key of your phone, and tabbing W, A, S, D on your virtual keyboard. Holding the louder key tells it that you want to navigate around and W, A, S, D are the replacement for UP, LEFT, DOWN and RIGHT arrow keys. After we are done, we again save the changes like we did above. Ctrl + X, Y, RETURN.

Step 8 - First run:
Now after all the preparation, it's about time to run our server for the first time, we can do so by executing the following command:
java -Xmx1G -Xms1G -jar server.jar
With the 1G standing for the amount of RAM we are allocating to the server. I would highly recommend to check how much total RAM your phone has on the internet before raising this up. You should always leave at least 2 GB of RAM to the system in order for it to run smooth still.
While the server is running like this, it works like a regular Minecraft terminal. You can use commands like /list or /op in it.

Step 9 - Stopping the server:
To stop the server properly, execute the command:
stop
It will save progress and shut down the server. All that is left to do is to hit "EXIT" at Termux, which can be found in your phones notification area.

Step 11 - Starting the server back up:
In order to start the server after shutting it down completely, we will have to first start the Termux app and then execute this command to start Ubuntu:
./start-ubuntu.sh
Now we need to navigate back into our server folder with:
cd serve
After that we can boot up our server with the command:
java -Xmx1G -Xms1G -jar server.jar
Done. Now we can execute commands like /list or /op again.

Step 12 - Installing mods (requires Forge/Fabric server software):
At first in case the server is running, we stop it with the command:
stop
If you just started Termux again after shutting everything down, make sure you booted up Ubuntu with the command:
./start-ubuntu.sh
And are inside the server folder using the command:
cd serve
Now let's get into it...
To be able to easily install mods, we will need to prepare a few things. First we need to register an account for Dropbox, it will help us to transmit the mods to the server. After that we will download the Dropbox app from either the PlayStore or APKPure and log in to our newly created account.
Now we download the app RAR from the PlayStore or APKPure, it will allow us to create custom ZIP files, which are essentially compressed files/folders.
At the next step we download the mods we want to install on our phone, using the CurseForge website. Remember to only use mods for your version of Forge/Fabric, in our case that's 1.16.1.
After you are done, open up the RAR app and select the mods you downloaded (you should find them at "Downloads") by clicking on the little squares to the right of them. After you selected all your mods, tab the little archive with a + on it, located at the top center. Select "ZIP" as the type and as the name, use "mods.zip". Now we finish by tabbing "OK".
In the next step we will upload our mods to Dropbox, simply open the app and log in. You should see a + at the bottom right where you can select your "mods.zip" file now. After the upload is done, tab the 3 dots next to the file and hit "share" and then hit "Create link" at the bottom right to copy the link to the clipboard. Also DON'T publish the file link to anyone without checking the license terms first for each mod. Making a private copy for yourself is usually okay though.
Now we will need a few tools for our server to be able to handle ZIP files, just install them by executing the following command:
apt install zip -y && apt install unzip -y
Now we navigate to our servers mods folder. We can do that with the command:
cd mods/
Here it gets a little tricky, we will have to modify the link we copied to the clipboard earlier a little in order for it to work. But all we have to do is change the "0" at the end of it to a "1".
So for example we change this link:
NOT-SO-COOL-LINK=0
Into this link:
REALLY-COOL-LINK=1
After that we can download it on our server using wget with a command like this:
wget -O mods.zip LINK-YOU-COPIED-TO-YOUR-CLIPBOARD-WITH-THE-CHANGES-MADE-TO-IT
Now we simply extract it and delete the ZIP file using the command:
unzip mods.zip && rm mods.zip
After that we can navigate back to our main folder using the command:
cd ..
Now the mods are successfully installed on the server. All that's left to do is boot it up using:
java -Xmx1G -Xms1G -jar server.jar
Remember what we learned about the 1G earlier.

Step 13 - Joining the server:
In order to be able to join the server, we will first have to check for its local IP address. The easiest way to do so, is to open the WiFi settings of your phone and search for "details". The numbers written at "IP address" are what we are after. They usually looks something like 192.x.x.x with x being random numbers. All that's left to do now is to start Minecraft and to join our server by entering the IP we found in our settings as the server address.
As a reminder: Modded players will have to install Minecraft Forge on the right version and the mods as well. But I won't explain that in detail, as who ever came this far, should know how to install mods or use Google.

RESPONSIBILITY NOTE:
I do NOT take responsibility for any damage caused on your device following this tutorial. It is YOUR responsibility not to overwork your phone. Although it is unlikely that your phone can't handle it, because essentially Termux is just an app running on your phone.

2020.07.20 06:44 freyasan [Guide] Dating in Singapore by a Cheesepie (For Straight Dudes)

Given how the two genders of SG seems to be at war over dating, and how I'm now happily being massaged by my husband (he's laughing as I type this), I feel socially-obliged to write this guide. Hopefully, there will be fewer sad BBFAs here after this.
Note: This is an entry-level guide, for straight millennial dudes that are looking for long-term commitment. It's not a be-all-end-all bible, so please use your own good judgement to adjust for your context. (Someone cover the LGBTQ+, Gen Z, or actual laojiao versions pls.)
Edit: Thank you all for the awards. *bows neatly in Japanese*

Prequel:

Finding and making your mark:

Pre-date:

After the first date, it's all on you. If it worked out well, odds are good that the girl will say it or hint that she wants more. It's not rocket science; just don't be an asshole and digest the feedback from your chick before you rebut anything.
Also, if she doesn't treat you right, just move the hell on. Like, she gaslights and abuses you, or does dodgy shit like not making your relationship known to others. Or she takes you for granted.
Everyone deserves to be happy and to have a healthy relationship.

Bonus tips from my hubby:

EDIT: I seem to have potatoed something. Gonna recompile all the good comments from others.

Others said:

u/stormguyy - Rejection (and possibly being ghosted) is part of modern dating culture. Learn to recognize when there’s no spark on their end and move onto the next.
u/UnparagonedWisdom - Personally, I think an important mindset to have is that your partner does not complete you.
u/mysuperpowerissleep - About covering your ass.
u/Silvsice - I think what a lot of people forget about with dating is that it should be an easy and enjoyable experience to see how well you fit with someone. If you find yourself having to filter your personality, and read through guides or youtube videos on how to adjust to someone, then you need to admit that you're not a good match.

Worthy mentions:

u/Insect-Competitive - Your husband seems like a great wife.
Yes. u/Echlori is a great partner; 10/10 will marry him again if there's a next life. The point is, a lot of the qualities of a great wife/husband apply to both genders. I fell for his character, warm heart, and progressive mindset. It made me want to be a better person, just so I can help make his dream work.
Have faith and keep your eyes open. With the right chick, you will find your own version of happiness too.

All the best!

2020.07.05 05:29 PixelGMS [Major Update] Interactive Worm CYOA V6.0.7, No longer any required set-up, and now there are pictures!

Now, I'm sure anyone who played the original version of the interactive CYOA agrees that it was full of mistakes, errors, and misspellings. Well, not anymore! While I'm sure there are still some mistakes, they're mostly gone. I'm sure everyone thought it was bland with a lack of pictures, well, again, not anymore! While not every option, or even section, has pictures, many of them do. Also, what I'm sure was the biggest problem for a lot of people: The set-up. While simple and quick, only taking a couple of minutes, it's now completely gone! Just a click of a link and you're on a website! The reason there wasn't before was that I was an idiot and tried to upload a .rar file instead of its contents.
TLDR: It's a lot better and requires no set-up.
Link to Interactive CYOA: (Warning: It takes a while to load)
YOU NEED TO CLICK OPTIONS TO SELECT THEM! https://interactivewormcyoav6.neocities.org/WormCYOAV6/WormCYOAV6.html
I also created a Discord if anyone wants to know whenever there's a new version of the CYOA or anyone wants to post their stories/builds using the CYOA. You also get early access when I finish a version at like 4 AM and just want to go to sleep. Link: https://discord.gg/rXbzwGG
All builds of the CYOA can be found here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Lbl-TnxrMIU4TZ346rFDpYD_rhTq7isQ?usp=sharing
Static Version: https://imgur.com/gallery/rLlG16K or https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1b_CWsLE44LiTBKDNuLz64aHf5LYUt_Zg?usp=sharing
Changelog (6.0.1-6.0.8): (6.0.1-6.0.3) Fixed some spelling mistakes, missing names, incorrect names. Shard Influence choice that didn't give points now does. Fixed an ambiguous phrasing. Made it so, by pressing the check mark in the circle on the bottom right hand corner you can see all the choices you have made.
(6.0.4) Changed the color of selections to an aqua/turquoise color. Added 4 more drawbacks. Added the requirements for Fan Service perk.
(6.0.5) Changes: Changed Yang It! and Love Potion to be generally better. Made Unlimited Potential harder to maintain. Change the Point Exchange section. Changed Stop! Hammer Time. so that it was more powerful, though still nonlethal, and cost one less point. Made 1 1:1 Shardless Point Conversion section that could convert 1 SP to 1 CP, though not vice versa. Added some new drawbacks and made Poor incompatible with Rich. Made it so you can be orphaned at any age. Made it clear that, if you don't choose Shard Influence options, your Shard is not influencing you. Made it so Scenario points are increased the closer you are to Gold Morning. Added three more scenarios, three of which don't grant or cost points. Messed with the points from the locations, now points are based on how dangerous the location is. Added several new skills, most of which cost 1 CP. Added pictures, though not to everything. Changed it so that Oberon/Titania was 5 powers instead of 3.
(6.0.6): Added points to Shard Rank, Changed an error where CP was written as SP, Made Twinsies free (though the powers still cost just as much), I added pictures to the Scenarios, I added pictures to the Shard section for both types of Shards, though not Shardless, I added pictures to some of the perks and drawbacks, I made it so that Inserts couldn't take the Homeless, Orphaned, or Poor drawbacks, made it so that Cloak Mark IV showed as Incompatible with Shardless rather than vice versa. It was already Incompatible, I just forgot to change some text.
(6.0.7): I went through the whole CYOA and fixed any spelling or grammar errors I found. I edited the Gold Morning scenario to start on Gold Morning and had it give an extra 5 SP and 5 less CP. Slightly altered the wording for a couple of the alignments. Added a bit to Self-Insert and removed the SP cost since you already need to pay to Self-Insert into specific characters anyway. Added a bit to Reincarnation. I messed with the points given by different ages a bit. Removed SP cost for Civilian Identities. Gave more points for being an orphan that wasn't younger than six years old, but still less than being a 0-6 y/o orphan. I noticed a contradiction between Self-Insert and Identity so I removed the part of Self-Insert that said you couldn't reincarnate into them before birth to fix this. I then realized that you can't Self-Insert as a Traveler so I removed that part too. Added to Taylor Hebert's Quality of Life description. Put /Lisa Wildbourn next to Sarah Livsey. Noticed that Annette was down as Lawful Good, fixed that. She's now Neutral Good. As a former member of Lustrum's movement, she probably broke some laws for the greater good before it got bad enough she needed to quit. I increased the point cost/gain for choosing a Queen/Normal Shard. I slightly lessened the severity of Not-So-Gentle Push. Fixed Wanted issue with True Neutral. Added details to Selective Amnesia. Added details to Slaughterhouse 8. Altered Corona Pollentia so a Shardless person could choose it to Trigger. Added detail to Adaptable Martial Arts. Edited Tier-1 powers and made many of them cheaper. Moved Avalon to Tier-3 and Unlimited Potential to Tier-2 and altered their costs to fit their new tier. Added Glaistig Uaine power to Tier-2 and tweaked Eidolon power to be more accurate. Weakened Copy power in the Endbringer sections, since one of the Twins can do it at the new level. Moved 'Plot' Armor and Noctis Cape to the perk section. Made it so 'Plot' Armor could be bought if you're Shardless. Strengthened Gravity. Made Yang it! stronger. Enhanced Forcefield slightly, as well as Invulnerable. Added tweak to Aura. Tweaked some other powers. Rebalanced powers a bit. Replaced Powerless with Trade! Added Combo powers, added Avatar, Biobringer, Yang, Jedi Knight, and Tsundere as combo powers. Made it clear that , (commas) with incompatible and requirements meant OR.
(6.0.8 Changelog): Changed it so no orphans can choose orphaned drawback. Fixed spelling of Handome so it's spelled Handsome. Make it so Biobringer does not require Riley, but made it slightly more costly. Added Avatar State to Avatar power, made it more costly too. Made it so Lost gives more than Brockton Bay. Made it so the date of the start of Ward is (hopefully) correct, or at least closer. Fixed picture sizes for Insane, Avalon, and Elderly. Made it so a mistake in the transfer can send you to a different world, still within the Worm/'Real' Multiverse, this way you need to prepare that world for a defense against Scion without being able to stop Scion before Gold Morning (Made it so worlds with weaker powers cost more). Made Shardless give more CP. Made Heracles cost twice as much CP. Tinfoil Hat drawback. Fixed Byakugan and Aegis. (Second Wave Parahuman) Option that causes a wave of Triggers, 100% of which are Tier-3 if you chose a Normal Shard, 97% of which are Tier-3 and 3% are Tier-2 if you chose a Vital Shard, and 97% are Tier-3, 2.5% are Tier-2, and 0.5% are Tier-1 if you chose a Queen Shard. Include our world as one of the universes you can be sent to by mistake, but make it require Second Wave Parahuman option. Made it so non-Earth options couldn't choose a location.
TLDR: A lot has changed.

2020.05.30 19:17 Opeh [Mod Application] Opeh

PART 1: IRL description (name, age, country, etc.): Hi, my name is Alex, I am 18 years old and I live in Canada. I like going out with friends to do something of my life and I like programming a lot. I am currently learning Computer Lessons at collegial level. I hope in the future that I will be able to obtain my diploma from university.
In-game description (IGN, how long have you been playing Minecraft and Chaincraft, your Discord, etc.): Hi, let me introduce myself! My nickname is Opeh, i've been playing Minecraft since almost the official release date(A LONG TIME AGO). Chaincraft has been my playground since the age of 12. I know a lot of players on there, and i must admit that i saw Chaincraft in all of his different shape of forms.
Past experience as a staff member: I used to be a t-mod, mod, admin, manager on here. I do have a lot of experience from dealing with staff and players problems. I used to do sometime events, but i'd pass most of my time fixing players problem etc.
Why do you want to be a staff member on Chaincraft: I feel like chaincraft has always been in my heart, and i'd like to support it any way I can!
Why should you be accepted as a staff member: From my past experiences, i've done good stuff and bad stuff. I certainly regret the bad stuff and would like to give back for those errors i used to do when i was younger. Also, being part of a team motivates me to get on more often on a game that was released a long time ago!
Indicate your timezone and your schedule: UTC-4, partial day time, night time.
PART 2: 1. Do you know how to screenshare properly? (yes/no): Of course I do.
2: If you answered yes, please elaborate more on the screensharing process and what you would do in the situation. (Lengthy explanation recommended): I don't think i have to explain the entire process of screensharing since it would leak some strings that is still private to this day. But i can tell you this, I have been teaching people on how to screenshare suspected players and the success rate from my lessons has dramatically changed their ss experience. It helped them improve a lot.
Basics of screensharing: We need to check the player's version by using F3 in-game or looking at Snooper Settings. With that, we can tell on what version the user is running minecraft. With a quick check in the .minecraft folder(opened in ressource packs for the actual game folder), we can check the versions if the user have a hacked client on. Within the .minecraft, multiple files could make a user banned because of their "ghost client" origins(Not telling, i'll avoid leaks the best I can). We can check the "mods" folder and verify with "WinRar" or "JD-Gui" to see if the mod is legit or not. Now that the basics are done, we need to get on Process Hacker and verify multiple strings from those process: "minecraft.exe", "explorer.exe", "isass.exe", and other processes. (I have a .txt folder with updated strings). More advanced stuff, we can check the programs that were modified or executed with LastActivityViewer. Even more, we can check if the user has launch a client via USB, with a usb tool.
Any extra info: Hope to cya on Chain! - Opeh <3

2020.05.25 00:58 jaberkatyshusband Mod Organizer 2 login/update conundrum

A few months ago we upgraded our computer to Win10 from Win7.
Since then, we've been able to start up Mod Organizer 2 and play a modded Skyrim SE fine.
Now I'm noticing that MO2 won't log in to Nexus on start up (specifically I get the "Login Failed, Try again?" message, and after that a box appears at the bottom saying host nexusmods not found).
I suspect this is because I need to update MO2, which is 2.0.8.3.
However, I'm not sure how to go about this, because of the following:
-I can't update using the globe button on the upper right of MO2, because that is greyed out and says MO is up to date
-when I click the icon to 'search nexus network for more mods', Microsoft Edge opens up as the browser, rather than Chrome
-if I try to download a mod from the Nexus using the "Mod Manager Download" option, a window pops up asking if I'd like to switch apps. Clicking "Yes" gets me the error message "Unrecognized game mode: skyrimspecialedition". Clicking "No" gets me no error message, but no download, either.
-if I go on to Chrome and download with manager, I get the same error message about unrecognized game mode. If I download manually, that works.
-OK, so I have a .rar archive with the mod. I go over to MO2 and choose "Install a new mod from an archive", then select the download. I get the error message "none of the available installer plugins were able to handle that archive"
With all of the above, I'm at a loss how to fix this. I'm wondering if the upgrade to Win10 caused some problems as well.
Any thoughts?

2020.04.20 19:38 Veldria Kaiserreich giving random minister names?

I'm working on fleshing out Ulster as a submod for Kaiserreich, but the ministers are giving me a bit of bother. I'm able to get James Craig as the head of government, and it recognises the ideology and trait I've assigned to him, but for some reason the game is giving him the name "Hubert Kelly". In addition, it seems the Irish head of government has been replaced by a question mark. I haven't edited Eoin O'Duffy, although I did use him as a template for the code, but from what I can see there's no reference to him left in the new code. Anyone got any ideas? I'm at a loss.
I'll paste the bit of code that I think is relevant below, but if that doesn't present any clues then here's a link to a .rar containing the mod: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PUDDTS11pi4d2r2axdSXSw8u8vrG945x/view?usp=sharing

### ULS Ideas ideas = { head_of_government = { ULS_James_Craig_hog_pau = { allowed = { original_tag = ULS } available = { custom_trigger_tooltip = { tooltip = head_of_gov_available has_country_flag = can_replace_hog always = no } } on_add = { log = "[GetDateText]: [Root.GetName]: add idea ULS_James_Craig_hog_pau" } traits = { head_of_government paternal_autocrat hog_corporate_suit } }
Thanks for having a gander!

2020.03.11 14:43 SirCalalot GameBoy Interface Setup and Pixel Perfect Guide

Edit: Thanks to Extrems for clarification on a lot of this - I've adjusted the original post to avoid any misinformation.

Hi All,
Like many of you I'm sure, I've delved into GameCube softmodding to get the cleanest picture quality for the GameBoy Player, as the default software is not only blurry, but it also has uneven pixel scaling.
As I'm also sure most of you here are aware, all the information on the matter is either scattered across the 'net or just plain not there - leaving the majority of us to fend for ourselves with trial and error. Plus a lot of set-up guides for the Swiss Homebrew Launcher and GameBoy Interface assume that the user has a GameCube Component Cable and is able to output digital 480p video (all analogue outputs on all stock GameCubes are limited to 480i and below).
This is meant to be an absolute beginners guide, from square one. I imagine a lot of people who start down this path from scratch will have - a GameCube, a GameBoy Player and a Widescreen LCD HDTV.
So I thought I'd post my findings/journey in one place... here!
(This is going to get in-depth, so look for the different headings in bold).

First port of call - the correct cables!
As I have PAL GameCube ( and I'm a reasonable person) I didn't feel the need to splash out on the notoriously expensive Component Cables, so I opted for the "GC RGB SCART (PAL) PACKAPUNCH PRO" cable from RetroGamingCables.co.uk. Plus my Samsung SQ04 1080p TV has an RGB SCART input, so I knew I'd be groovy in that regard.
Only the PAL GameCubes can output RGB natively, while NTSC GameCubes can instead output S-Video, so be careful of what your system actually is capable of. These are the best stock signal outputs you can get before shelling out for a Component Cable. Plugging in that bad boy made an instant difference even using the standard GameBoy Player Software disc - I could actually see individual pixels for once! Blurry as they may be.
Another thing to note about RGB video signal is the type of "Sync" your cable uses, without going into too much depth here - the GameCube can only output Sync on Luma via RGB SCART (and only the PAL GameCube at that). While this is arguably the RGB signal most prone to interference, good cable shielding should give you a nice clean image. Any GameCube cables that claim to use the arguably superior "CSYNC" method are just separating the existing Sync signal into its own channel and do not improve quality. They are merely there for those using Monitors or video set-ups that play nicer with the CSYNC signal method.
Worth writing here is that the RGB SCART input on my TV was prone to flickering and annoying image banding from various sources. It took me ages to pin down that it was the TV port and not the cables that were the issue, seeing as no-one else on the 'net seemed to have the same problem. Putting the vacuum cleaner in there on max before then firing some compressed air into the port fixed the issue entirely (there, now it's online and someone can find this post to help them). This makes sense now I think about it, as RGB SCART is an analogue signal, prone to interference and it's also a port that went unused on my TV for years...
... Anyhoo more info on RGB and Sync types can be found here.

Second point of attack - getting homebrew and the GameBoy Interface onto your console!
I won't bore you with all the dead-ends and tribulations of my journey, but will instead make this more of a step-by-step process for newbs so the information is out there and easy to digest. I got a lot of the information here, so you can read that for various other methods of getting homebrew and Swiss on your system. I'll just be detailing my own method.
The first thing to address is that you can't use homebrew or launch Swiss without already having a hacked Memory Card (or Datel Media Launcher). I’ll be detailing the hacked game save method for launching Swiss, as that’s the method I went with. There are proponents for the Datel Media Launcher, so it’s worth looking into which you’d prefer. So with that in mind...

You will need:
- To purchase a GameCube Memory Card with a hacked game save and Swiss on it. The Wind Waker save exploit is fastest to load and requires the least button presses (but it's not the only way, if you don't have the game). eBay user kingkodongo is a seller from Japan who I bought from. Look for "Swiss Boot Loader and Homebrew Utility Tool on Nintendo Gamecube Memory Card 251".
- To purchase an SD Card to GameCube Memory Card adapter.
- A freshly formatted SD Card to go in said adapter. I didn't have any trouble with the format or size of the card as Swiss is pretty lenient when reading from SD (it's only the Datel Media Launcher that is apparently limited to 2GB).
- A copy of Wind Waker (or other hack-compatible game of choice).
- OPTIONAL - A spare memory card to put GameBoy Interface (GBI) and a copy of the Wind Waker Hack on, so you can boot straight into GBI without Swiss. This only needs a smaller 52 block Memory Card, as GBI isn't as large as Swiss.

Setup:
- Next step, I've created a .rar file that contains everything you should need. This is a OneDrive link, so let me know if it goes down. The idea here is to copy the contents of "GCBOOT" into the root of your SD card via your PC. This contains the current (as of typing) versions of the Wind Waker game save exploit, Swiss boot launcher, GameCube Memory Manager and GameBoy Interface.
- Now put your SD card into the GC Memory Card adapter and that into Slot B of your GameCube.
- Put your purchased GameCube Memory Card with Swiss into Slot A.
- Whack in Wind Waker and turn the thing on!
- When prompted whether you want to run in 60hz mode (for your PAL gamers), say 'yes' and hammer the A button to get to the title screen. Swiss/GBI will use this choice to make informed decisions about default settings.
- When the game starts to bring up the save select, it should hopefully judder a bit and freeze for a second before booting up into Swiss.
- CONGRATS! You can now select "gbi.dol" from the list of files and after a settings window you are running GameBoy Interface! Pat yourself on the back.

GameBoy Interface Customisation (and some suggested "optimal" settings I use over RGB SCART)
GameBoy Interface comes in three flavours:
- Standard ("gbi.dol") - Full fat version with all the options.
"The standard edition is ideal for sample-and-hold displays (LCD, OLED). By default, it emulates some aspects of the color and sound of the original handheld. With a Broadband Adapter and USB Gecko in hand, it can be used as a small Game Boy Advance development kit." - Extrems, GC-Forever
- High-Fidelity ("gbihf.dol") - The lowest-latency version with default options out-of-the-box.
"The high-fidelity edition is ideal for use with the Open Source Scan Converter, XRGB-mini Framemeister, or using solely a video capture device and software processing. Given the right setup, it can offer audiovisual quality comparable to emulation on newer platforms. It is less than suitable for direct display connection, with some exceptions." - Extrems, GC-Forever
- Speedrunning ("gbisr.dol")
"The speedrunning edition is ideal for impulse displays (CRT, 1ms MPRT LCD, Plasma). It attempts to be a non-controversial improvement for speedrunners. To ease transition, it can be configured to closely mimic the Game Boy Player Start-up Disc." - Extrems, GC-Forever
Each of these has various console command options and settings (shown under the 'Options' heading on the above links) as well as an accompanying .dcp file which shows some of these when you load GBI up. The .dcp file controls the options that you see in the black window when you select the .dol file from Swiss before booting into the App with Start.
Something of note is that the default .dcp file that the GBI downloads come with isn't extensive and a lot of options are hidden or named slightly different to their console commands. This was a pain for me finding the right settings for my display, so I altered "gbi.dcp" to have the most relevant settings at the top of the list.
Also, just because a greyed-out setting has a value, it doesn't mean that it is used as default. If you want to make sure that an option is set, you'll have to make sure it's ticked.
It's handy to know that you can come back to Swiss when running the GameBoy Interface by making sure the details overlay is visible ('X' on the GameCube Pad) and holding 'Start'. You can also hold the reset button on the console to swap games! Saves you having to load via Wind Waker every time to check settings.

As for my preferred settings:
Edit: This is where I originally detailed my settings for the Standard Edition of GBI. Turns out that what I had settled on was a slightly less-impressive version of the High-Fidelity Edition ("gbihf.dol") with default options. Funny how that works out. I'm still learning, but at least I spent some time delving into the visual differences of each particular setting to see what effect they were having on the image.

Creating your own Memory Card to boot straight into GameBoy Interface (with your preferred settings, if you like)
If you would like to create a memory card that boots straight into a default version of GBI (I'd suggest the High-Fidelity Edition ["gbihf.dol"]), jump to number 5.
If you've had a bit of a play with your own settings and want to boot straight into GameBoy Interface with them, look in the supplied "dol2gci" folder (link to .rar file above), to find what you need:
  1. Open "gbi.cli" in Notepad and put in your favoured console commands (a list of these can be found at "https://www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.php?title=Game_Boy_Interface/Standard_Edition" under Options).
  2. Run "dol2gci.bat" and it will spit out a file called "gbi-custom.gci".
  3. Copy this file to the "/MCBACKUP" folder of your SD card.
  4. Remove the SD card from your PC and plug it back into the GameCube with the adapter.
  5. As before, put your purchased Memory Card with Swiss into Slot A and the SD Card in Slot B.
  6. Using Wind Waker, turn the system on and load into Swiss by hammering 'A' like a Track & Field expert.
  7. Select the GameCube Memory Manager, "gcmm_14f.dol".
  8. This will now ask you to select the slot where the SD Gecko is inserted (that's the SD card), hit the 'B' button for slot B.
  9. Now take your Memory Card with Swiss on it out of Slot A. You really don't want to accidentally wipe this card unless you have a backup.
  10. Put a spare GameCube Memory card into Slot A which will serve as your GameBoy Interface bootloader. Make sure you don't have anything you want to keep on here as we'll be formatting it in the next step.
  11. REALLY make sure that you don't have your GameCube Memory Card with Swiss on it left in Slot A. Then hit 'L' + 'Z' to Format the Card.
  12. When that's done, hit 'X' to "Restore" the Wind Waker hacked save to the Memory Card. There are three versions, depending on your region. I use 'gzlp.gci' as I have the PAL copy of the game. 'gzle.gci' is for NTSC-U (US) and 'gzlj.gci' for NTSC-J (Japan).
  13. Next we transfer over the App that this exploit will boot. The default GameBoy Interface Apps have "gbi" at the beginning. The version with your settings should be called "gbi-custom.gci" if you didn't rename it.
  14. That should take a hot minute, then when it's done you can turn off your GameCube.
  15. Then turn it back on again!
  16. Hammer 'A' like you're trying to burrow through your controller until the save select screen, it should pause and then BAM! GameBoy Interface loaded! If you're using the Standard Edition, hit 'X' to hide the UI Overlay and you can use the console's Reset button to change games.

-----

I hope someone found it useful to have all this information down in one place. Sorry for the wall of text, but it beats having 12 tabs open in your web browser while also trying to decipher how all this works.
Let me know if you spot any misinformation or would like some clarification on any points and I will endeavour to keep this post up-to-date.
Cheers!

Edit: Thanks again to Extrems for help simplifying this, tenfold.

2020.03.03 17:32 xmr123 Problem running php on nginx ubuntu (files get downloaded)

Hi everyone,
I'm very new to php and ran into some issue that I have been trying to fix for a couple of hours.
I have setup Nginx on ubuntu 19.10, and installed php7.4-fpm. But whenever I try to open a file like index.php, located in my root folder /vawww/html (so localhost/index.php) it will download the file instead of running it.
Nginx is not communicating with php7.4-fpm, is my guess, but I can not find the mistake in my configuration files..

Could anyone take a look and spot what would be wrong.
Below I've put the files, in order
  1. /etc/nginx/fastcgi.conf:
  2. /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params:
  3. /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/server.conf
  4. /etc/nginx/mime.types
  5. /etc/php/7.4/fpm/php-fpm.conf
  6. /etc/php/7.4/fpm/pool.d/www.conf
  7. selection of /etc/php/7.4/fpm/php.ini since posting it all is too long
  8. output service nginx status & service php7.4-fpm status

If I'm looking at the wrong files or something and the error could be located elsewhere please guide me in the right direction.
And if you already read this far, I would like to thank you for your time!

2020.02.25 18:21 PEBKAC-Live Customer cannot access specific website - Internal Server Error

Hi all, let me preface this by saying firewalls and packet tracing are not exactly my area of expertise, so forgive me if I am getting some of the terminology wrong.
One of our customers is having issues accessing 1 specific website. www.charcoalblue.com
There's nothing offensive on the site and no reason the customer shouldnt be able to access it, we can access it from our side with no issues.
The customer has a sonicwall TZ300 device that we thought was causing the issue, however I have just been on a remote session with Sonicwall support and they have come to conclusion that the website itself is blocking the connection from our customers office.
They pointed to a line in the packet monitor that said "PSH,ACK" coming from the website hosting server that they said proves the sever is refusing the connection.
Is that right?
It seems right as when I view the source for the "Internal Server Error" page it has the Charcoalblue.com CSS information etc in the page (see below) so that would seem like the error is coming from their site?

2020.02.22 04:14 Quintalos Solution of Enigma

Step 1 :

A button is hidden in the top left corner of the page.
To find it, either look at the source page (Ctrl+U on most browsers)
Or, inspecting elements, that mostly do the same thing or just click everywhere.

Step 2 :

First pic is a Big Apple
Seocnd pic represents Freedom/Liberty
Third pic is just some buildings

--> This leads us to New York City
Also known as 'The Big Apple', has the Statue of Liberty
And known for the buildings

Step 3 :

This is a chain of keys that you have to do on an old keyboard phone
https://i.stack.imgur.com/hHq4v.jpg

--> Answer : Give your blood
Remember that if you are old enough, this can save lives,
and if you are a lucky guy that lives in the US, they even pay you for it!

Step 4 :

It is just a morse code

--> Answer : Dubnium

Step 5 :

It is simply letters in sign language.
The message says 'Hey, the answer is Chicoutimi'

--> So answer : Chicoutimi

Step 6 :

The French flag is here because you need to translate 'Hello'
So Hello is 'Bonjour' in French.
After this, SHA256 is a crypting algorithm
You need to encrypt 'Bonjour' with SHA256
It gives you : 9172e8eec99f144f72eca9a568759580edadb2cfd154857f07e657569493bc44
Since there's '2 *' before SHA256, you need to make the operation one more time.

--> Answer : 11e9a949ab811e7357ec1a75e50d88f4445af2de3d482490b7d8d4f309f4cb48

Step 7 :

This one starts to become a little harder,
it needs to be done in 2 steps.
First, you need to translate the upper part of the picture.
This is braille and is translated veelednem
If you write it backward it gives you Mendeleev, the inventor of the periodic table.
So now you need to take the symbol of the element that have for atomic number the ones in the bottom part of the picture.
We don't do anything with the 'A', it gives us 'A Mg I Ne'
As Mendeleev was written backward, we have to reverse 'Amgine'

--> Answer : Enigma

Step 8 :

First, you have to find who's the guy in the picture.
He's Alan Turing, the man who cracked the Enigma machine during WWII
Now, you need to take a look at the properties of the image.
If you download it and inspects the details, you see some informations :
  • Enigma M3
  • Reflector C
  • Rot 1 --> I; Pos --> E; Ring --> G
  • Rot 2 --> II; Pos --> N; Ring --> M
  • Rot 3 --> III; Pos --> I; Ring --> A
  • plugboard --> en ig ma
Now that we have all we need, with the name of the file 'FUUKK'
You can decode it with this website : https://cryptii.com/pipes/enigma machine

--> Answer : Dream

Step 9 :

For this one, if we look at the picture very closely, we notice something.
Especially in the center, there are some lines with a very slightly different color
This is a barcode. You need to change the background color with an image editing software
You can easily do this with paint, photoshop and even some tools online but it is a bit more complicated.
As you reveal the barcode, we also see the logo of Twitter.
The barcode gives a number which is 60335022.
By combining this number with the @ enigma that we see in the picture.
It gives the link https://twitter.com/enigma60335022

On this profile, there are 2 informations :
  • The post with the text : 4xfiaaOXhUUNOdgYXkrwpd?si=iXyvYk1wQqGxLq9Wf1wVCw
  • The bio that says : 'I love listening to music'

So you need to find a spotify playlist.
Here's the link : https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4xfiaaOXhUUNOdgYXkrwpd
The part after the '?' is optional.
The playlist says 'Bravo, Tu As Trouvé, The Answer, Lunaire'
A messy message but basically says 'Congratulations, you found the answer Lunaire'

--> Answer : Lunaire

Step 10 :

There are 2 elements in the picture.
The woman and the background.
If you search the woman, it is Dalida.
The background color hex code is : #76bd17, in rgb : 118, 189, 23
I know there might be some little differences sometimes but the real one is that one.
If you search it on google, you should find websites saying that the color name is 'Lima'
But as there might be little differences you can use that website : http://chir.ag/projects/name that colo
To find the name of the color.

With these 2 pieces of information, 'Dalida' and 'Lima', if you search this on google,
it gives you the 'Dalida Cafe Bar' and if you look at the comments of this establishment on google.
You can find a comment made by Enigma (if id doesn't appear in the first results, you can use the search tool with 'Enigma')
There's a link in the comment : prnt.sc / p58653, you just have to remove the spaces.
It gives you : http://prnt.sc/p58653

4 elements are in this image :
  • A Caesar portrait
  • A text : OTDNZXQCE
  • Other text : A --> A + (RED)
  • An orangeish background
If you take the value of red in the background it is 219
Caesar is here to tell you that the message is coded with caesar code / caesar cipher
Then A --> A + (RED) means you need to make an offset of 219 which is the same as 11
https://cryptii.com

--> Answer : Discomfort

Step 11 :

For this one, you first need to analyze the image, the name of the file is 'ti_amo__meta'
First, you need to focus on the 'meta' part. There are some metadata properties hidden in the file.
I use this website to see the metadata : http://exif.regex.info/exif.cgi
The property we are searching is 'Comment (pos)' that has the value '37.564025, 127.007274'
These are gps coordinates that leads you in the middle of Seoul, South Korea.
Link : http://www.google.fmaps/place/37°33'50.5"N+127°00'26.2"E
You need to go to street view on the exact point of the coordinates
You'll be able to see the café Ti amo
However, you're not able to find the answer.
Another property of the picture is the creation time / date when the picture was taken.
The dates is 2009 10 26, so you need to go back in time with street view in 2009. (The only other date possible)
After doing this, you'll be able to see the 2 Syllables '임' and '대' that are on the answer textfield.
Between them, you can see some numbers, this is the answer.

--> Answer : 0192840721

Step 12 :

You need to find who's the guy in the image.
He's Eugene Roshal, the creator of the RAR compressing format, WinRAR and FAR.
With this information, you need to open the image with either WinRAR, 7Zip and maybe other compressing softwares also work.
You'll find a text file inside, the file is named spectral and contains a youtube link.
The link is : https://youtu.be/0hoGPZPVzqM
The video is a 5 seconds stopwatch with a glitchy effect and a weird audio.
You only need to focus on the audio.
You need to trace the spectral waves of the audio.
You can either open it with audacity or do it with some online tools.
The spectral waves will write 'CACAHUETTE'
This is the final answer. This means peanut.

--> Final answer : Cacahuette

2020.02.11 17:13 Diacred Community tools & resources

Hello and welcome to this unofficial subreddit for the development of mods and tools related to Wolcen.
Here is a compiled (and hopefully updated regularly) list of our community's efforts to ease the process of creating mods or tools for Wolcen.
Also if you have any questions don't hesitate to join us on our modding discord: https://discord.gg/NJPKvf

Basics

Here is a basic understanding of how Wolcen works and how files are organised. I don't pretend to know everything (far from it) but this is what I could grasp from my explorations and what I could gather from the community's work.
When exploring Wolcen's installation folder you'll probably encounter two or three main file types:
  • XML and other text files, if not part of a Pak, those files are usually mostly configuration files.
  • DLL files, those files contain the game's compiled code. They can be decompiled but unless you really know what you are doing it's usually not worth the trouble.
  • PAK files are of high interest to us because those are compressed archives containing all the game's data, ranging from translations and skill names to loot tables and spell effects. When modding you'll probably mainly unpack those, modify some files and repack them (there are also other ways of modding though). It is worth noting that a *.pak file is a glorified *.zip file with some encryption on top of it.
This means that for your datamining or modding needs, one of your main goals will be to unpack those *.pak files. Those files are encrypted with an RSA encryption key that seems to changes with every minor release of Wolcen. You will need some software that uses the latest and up to date encryption key to do the unpacking (usually we use a program called PakDecrypt but there might be others).
You can find this program and others in the "Community tools" section.
Once you have successfully unpacked your Pak files you can start exploring all the game's data files. There are a lot of them but here are some pointers:
  • There are two types of XML files, CryXML files, which are encrypted and regular XML files. They are indistinguishable without opening them sadly but you'll definitely notice when you open an encrypted file ;). If you want or need to extract data from CryXML files you'll need a specific program to do so, once again you can find it in the "Community tools" section.
  • DDS files are image files, they can easily be converted to PNG or opened in Photoshop and other softwares. You can also convert them programatically with imagemagick.
  • CGF file are 3D files that can be opened in Maya (iirc) or converted to DAE format if you want to open those in Blender.

Community tools

Extracting Wolcen files
You'll probably notice it yourself but a lot of tools we use come from the Star Citizen community (as Star Citizen also uses CryEngine), so keep that in mind when searching tools, it can help you find what you need.
  • WolcenExtractor is an "all in one" tool that makes an attempt at streamlining the Wolcen unpacking process. It extracts *.pak files, decrypts CryXML and converts DDS to PNG. It makes use of a lot of the programs below to do its job. You just don't need to do it file by file. It can also be used to patch PakDecrypt with the latest RSA encryption key.
  • Wolcen KeyDumper, this tool will extract the RSA key used to decrypt Pak files directly from Wolcen's DLL for you and write it to a file of your choice. Read the readme, use it and all there is left to do is patch PakDecrypt with this key ;)
  • PakDecrypt is used to unpack *.pak files. It needs to be up to date with the latest Wolcen RSA encryption key for it to be able to do its job. If you can't use it, chances are you have an old version. It is worth noting that this software is used by the communities of other games that use *.pak files (Star Citizen, Warface...) and you can't use a Star Citizen's PakDecrypt to unpack Wolcen files.
  • DataForge is used to decrypt CryXML files so you can open them as regular XML files.
  • CryEngine Converter can be used to convert CGF files to DAE format. Haven't tried it yet, but it seems up to date.
  • CryEngine GFX Exporter

Modding and tinkering
Here are resources that you can use for modding and tinkering. This range from tools to save files with level 90 characters, etc...

Guides

Mods

Mods are now uploaded to Nexus Mods!Other mods:

Q & A

  • How do you repack your modded files? For instance I extracted the "Umbra.pak" folder and made some changes, how can I use my modded files?
You don't need to repack! You can simply place this Umbra folder in the \Wolcen\Game\ folder, and you're done! You don't need to touch it again or re-pack it into a .pak (Thanks to Phnx for this discovery). If you just have xml files, try saving them in \Wolcen\Game\Umbra\xxxx\xxxx (whatever the folder structure was in umbra.pak) You'll have to create those folders though.Alternatively, if you want to repack you can just use 7z and Store as compression level. No need to do anything more :3 And yeah rename. Unsure if compression would cause issues, so always just went with that.
- zypre

  • Where can I find my character's save file?
You can find it in C:\Users\ACCOUNTNAME\Saved Games\wolcen\savegames\characters

  • How can I edit my character's file in offline mode?
Go to C:\Users\YOURNAME\Saved Games\wolcen\savegames\characters and edit the .json File with a Notepad (Notepad++ is a good tool for that, VSCode is great too)

Assets

Here will be some extracted or recreated assets (images, sounds, 3D models...). WIP.

Misc

Latest RSA encryption key for Wolcen is:
30818902818100e2725ef9bb168871c238d91b64cfb8b1332f1bbcf105f40f252fb93f3a609d524cf8f5ee09bc554fd918db8bb3531d6f88befea4bfbdf51cb1e1df5e5dfa83fd6584d37e279924224fc4f8bb6c98ed50d27002e8ba21f35f0155a08d9ed276714032aeecda066c17fa54f1c33e5daf8b332b3cc0771490a15261b2dd908f53f10203010001
(Thanks atom0s for this)

That's all I have for now, I'll try to keep this updated, please feel free to ask me to add anything to this list, I'll be happy to.

Cheers!

2020.01.23 15:14 Elcomsoft A Comprehensive Guide on Securing Your System, Archives and Documents

A Comprehensive Guide on Securing Your System, Archives and Documents
How can you make your system and documents secure? Today, 256-bit AES encryption is offered by everyone and their dog. However, AES encryption does not mean much (or anything at all) when it comes to the real security of your data. Implementing encryption at the right time and in the right spot is no less important than choosing strong encryption credentials and managing the encryption keys.
While the previous part may sound a bit complicated, it all comes down to much simpler things than choosing the strongest encryption algorithm or selecting the length of the encryption key. If you are a Windows user, it all comes down to choosing the optimal data protection strategy for your particular usage scenario; protecting your storage media and the data you keep on them.

Defining your goals

Before you start considering encrypting your hard drives and files, make sure to define your objectives. What information would you like to protect? What threats do you consider important, less important and quite improbable?

Full-disk encryption part I: protecting your boot device

A reliable system protection is impossible without protecting your boot device. An unencrypted boot device (disk C: on most systems) allows for way too many vectors of attack ranging from hibernation and page file analysis to instant extraction of stored passwords from your Web browser vault. In other words, securing your boot device with BitLocker is an absolutely mandatory preliminary step and the most important security layer.
  • Availability: Windows 10 Professional and higher with TPM2.0, Intel PTT or Group Policy edit; all Windows editions for device encryption in thin and light devices meeting minimum requirements.
    • Note: although Windows 10 Home cannot natively create new BitLocker volumes, it can unlock BitLocker encrypted drives with full read-write access
  • Physical access, hard drive only: strong protection
  • Physical access, entire computer: it’s complicated
  • Other users on the same computer: not applicable
  • Malware/ransomware: not applicable
  • Online attacks: not applicable
  • Usage cases: protect data against theft of computer or hard drive; protect data if hard drives are sold or RMA’d; protect data against physical extraction.
If your computer meets the requirements (namely, the presence of a hardware TPM2.0 module or software-based Intel Platform Trust Technology), enabling BitLocker on your computer can be as easy as opening the Control Panel and launching the BitLocker Drive Encryption applet. Note that not all editions of Windows 10 can use BitLocker protection.
We have a comprehensive article on BitLocker protection in our blog, which is highly recommended. Introduction to BitLocker: Protecting Your System Disk
What caveats are there when it comes to securing data against physical extraction? The thing is, while BitLocker is nearly a 100% effective solution for protecting the bare drive, it might not be as secure if the intruder has access to the entire computer with the hard drive installed. Even if your computer is equipped with a TPM2.0/Intel PTT module, Windows will still unlock the encrypted hard drive if Secure Boot conditions are met. This in turn opens numerous vectors of attack that may allow the intruder to intercept the on-the-fly BitLocker encryption key and decrypt the hard drive. These vectors of attack include:
  1. Making a RAM image of a running computer with BitLocker volume(s) mounted. This can be done via a Thunderbolt attack (Windows, by default, does not disable Thunderbolt DMA access when locked) or a cold boot attack.
  2. Breaking or extracting your Windows logon password (e.g. extracting from your Google account, your smartphone, or from another computer you have logged in and synced your data to).
  3. Obtaining your BitLocker Recovery Key from your Microsoft Account or Active Directory.
Advanced users and system administrators can read the following guide to secure their BitLocker volumes: BitLocker recovery guide

Full-disk encryption part II: protecting external storage devices

BitLocker is good not only for protecting your boot device, but for encrypting data on other volumes, built-in and removable. BitLocker protects external storage devices with BitLocker To Go, an encryption algorithm based on a password. In addition to passwords, external drives encrypted with BitLocker To Go have an option to unlock with a smart card on another computer by using BitLocker Drive Encryption in Control Panel. Finally, users can opt to make their encrypted external devices automatically unlock when connected to their (trusted) computer.
  • Availability:
    • Encrypt external devices: Windows 10 Professional and Enterprise
    • Access BitLocker encrypted devices: although Windows 10 Home cannot natively encrypt drives with BitLocker, it can access BitLocker encrypted drives with full read-write access
  • Physical access, device only: protection as strong as your password
  • Physical access, entire computer: it’s complicated (see previous chapter)
    • Note: if you enabled the option “Unlock automatically on this PC”, then effectively no protection
  • Other users on the same computer: strong protection if offline/not mounted
  • Malware/ransomware: strong protection if offline/not mounted
  • Online attacks: strong protection if offline/not mounted
  • Usage cases: protect data stored on external storage devices such as external drive enclosures, USB flash drives etc.
Unlike system drive encryption, BitLocker To Go does not support multifactor authentication. This means you cannot use TPM protection as an additional form of authentication. You can, however, make BitLocker To Go devices unlock automatically when they are inserted in your (trusted) computer, which carries obvious security implications.

Full-disk encryption part III: using third-party crypto containers

I put it here just for the sake of completeness. If you are considering using a crypto-container such as VeraCrypt or PGP, you probably know what it is good for and how to use it. I’ll just add several things that aren’t immediately obvious when you set up encryption. In fact, the two things are so non-obvious that many coach experts have it backwards. (The right way: Choosing the right hashing algorithm – it’s all about slowness).
  • Availability: VeraCrypt is available on most relevant platforms
  • Physical access, hard drive only: very strong protection unless misconfigured
    • Misconfiguration examples: volume stays mounted when computer sleeps or hibernates; volume stays mounted when computer is locked (matter of security vs. convenience); volume unlocked with security key (e.g. USB flash drive) and no password (if USB flash drive is discovered)
  • Physical access, entire computer:
    • volume not mounted at time of analysis: very strong protection
    • volume mounted: very little protection
  • Other users on the same computer
    • volume not mounted at time of analysis: very strong protection
    • volume mounted: very little protection
  • Malware/ransomware: same as above
  • Online attacks: same as above
  • Usage cases: protect data against theft of computer or hard drive; protect data if hard drives are sold or RMA’d; protect data against physical extraction.
The choice of encryption algorithm (spoiler: use AES)
Crypto containers such as VeraCrypt offer the choice of several (actually, multiple) encryption algorithms that range from the industry-standard AES to some quite exotic algorithms such as Serpent or Kuznyechik. For the paranoiacs among us, VeraCrypt offers stacked encryption (e.g. the Serpent(AES) option). The thing is, the choice of an encryption algorithm does not affect the security of your data (unless you pick an algorithm with known or suspected vulnerabilities; finger pointed to Kuznyechik).
The choice of encryption algorithm does not affect the security of your data. A single round AES-256 encryption will be exactly as secure as Serpent(AES) or Serpent(Twofish(AES)). Moreover, the choice of encryption does not even affect the recovery speed (the speed of brute-force attacks on your password)!
Considering that AES is the only hardware-accelerated encryption algorithm in all reasonably modern processors, choosing any encryption algorithm other than AES-256 will unnecessarily slow down your reads and writes (expect a difference of 2 to 3 orders of magnitude in theoretical RAM-to-RAM encryption speeds) without providing any additional security benefit.
If choosing an encryption algorithm other than AES does not affect security, then what does?
The choice of hashing algorithm
When VeraCrypt encrypts (or decrypts) your data, it is using a binary encryption key to perform symmetric cryptographic operations. This media encryption key (MEK) is stored along with the encrypted data. The Media Encryption Key (MEK) is encrypted with a Key Encryption Key (KEK), which, in turn, is the result of multiple (hundreds of thousands) iterative hash operations performed on the user’s password.
In other words, when you type a password, the crypto container will perform a calculation of a certain hash function, and repeat that a 100,000 times or more (in order to deliberately slow down brute-force attacks).
If you want to make your encrypted volume more secure, you can change one of the two things:
  1. Increase the number of hash iterations
  2. Don’t use defaults
  3. Choose a slower hash function
VeraCrypt allows modifying the number of hash iterations by adjusting the PIM (Personal Iterations Multiplier); here is the how-to. The PIM value controls the number of iterations that is used to derive the encryption key from the password that you type. This value can be specified through the password dialog or in the command line. If you don’t manually specify the PIM value, VeraCrypt will use the default number of iterations, which is bad because (2). For SHA-512 or Whirlpool (the two recommended choices), VeraCrypt defaults to Iterations = 15000 + (PIM x 1000).
Why would you want to change the number of hash iterations? Because an attacker will first try to break your password using the defaults. Most tools used by the attackers to brute-force your password will first run the attack using all-defaults: the default encryption algorithm (AES), hash function (SHA-512) and PIM. Changing the PIM value is an easy way to substantially increase security without making your password more complex. Changing the hashing algorithm from default (SHA-512) to Whirlpool also makes sense in this context.
Which brings us to the choice of a hashing algorithm. VeraCrypt offers the choice of SHA-512 (slow, good choice), Whirlpool (slower, even better choice), SHA-256 (slow, but not as slow as SHA-512, use other hash instead), and Streebog (untested). Choosing the right hashing algorithm – it’s all about slowness has some benchmarks and some good explanations; highly recommended. Selecting Whirlpool makes a lot of sense because a) it is slower than SHA-512 (thus will be significantly slower to attack), and b) it is a non-default selection, which significantly increases the complexity of the attack.

File system encryption: when and how to use EFS

If you read the Wikipedia article about Microsoft Encrypting File System (EFS), you’ll get that EFS has been introduced in NTFS 3.0 in order to provides file system level encryption. The article reads: “The technology enables files to be transparently encrypted to protect confidential data from attackers with physical access to the computer.”
While all of that is interesting, neither statement explains who and, most importantly, why should be using EFS, and what exactly the encrypting file system protects against.
  • Availability: all versions and all editions of Windows 10 (and most older versions of Windows)
  • Physical access, hard drive only: as strong as your Windows account password
  • Physical access, entire computer: same as above
  • Other users on the same computer: effective protection
  • Malware/ransomware: not applicable
  • Online attacks: not applicable
  • Usage cases: protect your documents from other users of your computer; an extra layer of security on BitLocker-protected drives; reasonably strong, very easy and fully transparent document encryption on computers where BitLocker is not supported.
What does EFS protect against, and who should be using it?
The purpose of Encrypting File System is protecting your data from users who share your computer. If you have a PC with several users, and each user has their own Windows login (as opposed to sharing a single Windows account), activating EFS encryption is the easiest way to protect your files from being accessed by those other users.
What is the relation between EFS and BitLocker, and which one should you use?
BitLocker protects your entire system volume. Any user who can log in to your computer will unlock the system volume. If a user has administrative privileges (or can escalate a non-admin account by using an exploit), he or she will also gain access to files and documents stored in other users’ accounts on that computer.
Encrypting File System, on the other hand, only protects selected folders. It won’t, for example, protect your instant messenger databases or encrypt your browsing history. It’s mostly just for documents, pictures and videos you keep in your account. However, EFS will effectively protect those files against other users who can log on to your computer, even if they have administrative privileges.
If an attacker got physical access to the computer, BitLocker is the first line of defence. Relying solely on EFS to secure the PC against attacks with physical access is not the best idea.
How does it all work? It’s actually quite simple. Right-click on a file or folder you’d like to encrypt, select Properties and click the Advanced button in the General tab. In the Advanced Attributes dialog select Encrypt contents to secure data and click OK.

https://preview.redd.it/742u0dpqdjc41.png?width=1019&format=png&auto=webp&s=26dcec93aba51d314531f65c6e68ac12302bc88f
This is it. Windows will now encrypt the selected file or folder with your Windows logon credentials. There are no passwords to type and no encryption keys to save.
There is a certain drawback to using EFS encryption. If you ever forget your Windows password and have to reset it from a separate Administrator account (or your domain administrator resets the password for you), the EFS encryption keys will be lost, and you will be unable to decrypt your data without going through the data recovery process with Elcomsoft Advanced EFS Data Recovery. Note that you must recover your Windows password in order to decrypt the files. However, if you simply change your Windows password by following the normal procedure (typing your old password followed by entering the new one), you will be fine.

Document encryption

Encrypting individual documents is an important part of multi-layer security. Microsoft Office apps can use passwords to encrypt the documents’ content. No one without a password should be able to decrypt the document.
  • Availability: all versions of Microsoft Office
  • Security: depends on the version of Microsoft Office, the file format you’re using to save the files and the strength of your password.
  • Physical access, hard drive only: strong protection (with caveats)
  • Physical access, entire computer: strong protection (with caveats)
  • Other users on the same computer: strong protection (with caveats)
  • Other users on your Local Area Network: strong protection (with caveats)
  • Malware/ransomware: content protection. Malware won’t be able to decrypt your files and read your data. However, malware/ransomware can still encrypt your files, effectively locking you out.
  • Online attacks: content protection. Strong protection against unauthorized data access; no protection against unauthorized deletion
  • Usage cases: protect the content of your documents against anyone who does not know the encryption password.
  • How to: Protect a document with a password
A million dollar question: if you are on a local area network, should you use EFS or document encryption to protect documents against other users on the same LAN? In this case, it’s better to use both. EFS will make it impossible to gain access to encrypted files and folders without knowing your Windows account/domain credentials. Password protection of individual documents will make documents difficult to break even if the attacker knows your logon credentials.
The caveats of document encryption
So what exactly does “strong protection (with caveats)” mean? The thing is, your documents are just as secure as the password you use to protect them. If you re-use a password you already stored in your browser cache or in the keychain, extracting that password and decrypting the documents will be a matter of minutes in many types of attacks.
What if you use a cryptographically strong and truly unique password to encrypt documents? Are these documents secure? The thing is, they will be just as secure as the office app permits them to be. In Microsoft Office encryption evolution: from Office 97 to Office 2019 I discussed the encryption algorithms and protection strength of Microsoft Office apps from the early days to the most current release.
Generally speaking, everything before Office 2000 was insecure (no protection). Office 2000, XP and Office 2003 had very weak encryption that can be usually broken in under a day.
Since Office 2007, Microsoft started taking encryption seriously. Office 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 brought security to the new level, making encrypted documents very secure.
Okay, so you are using the latest Office and selected a strong password; are we secure now? The thing is, you’ll be just as secure as the document format allows. If you are using the newer DOCX/XLSX format (files with .docx / .xlsx extensions), you’re good. If, however, you are saving your documents in “compatibility” mode, you are sacrificing encryption and make your documents as vulnerable as if they were saved by an Office 2003 app.
Best practices:
  1. Use the latest version of Microsoft Office to save documents. If the latest version is not available, use at least Office 2013 (the newer the better).
  2. Never save documents in “compatibility” mode. Make sure that the files are DOCX/XLSX as opposed to DOC/XLS.
  3. Use a unique, cryptographically strong password to encrypt documents. Remember: if the password is broken once (e.g. pulled from your Google account or recovered from a document you accidentally saved in the “compatible” format), it will be used to break everything else, including documents with strong encryption.
  4. If you email an encrypted document, do use a unique, one-time password for that document, and never send both the document and the password in the same email. In fact, you should never send the password by email since that would allow an attacker who gained access to your email account to decrypt the document. Send the document and the password via separate communication channels (e.g. email / text message, chat or phone call).

Protecting backups and archives

Making regular backups is a common wisdom. Protecting those backups is a wisdom much less common. Once you make a backup, make sure to give it as strong a protection as your boot drive.
  1. Store backups on BitLocker-protected media. Even if your backup tool (e.g. the one built into Windows) does not support encryption, at very least your storage media is protected with full-disk encryption. Note: Windows 10 does support the recovery from BitLocker-protected disks. Just create a bootable install image from Microsoft Web site (use “Create Windows 10 installation media”).
  2. If your backup tool supports encryption, it may be a good idea to encrypt your backups (AND store them on a BitLocker-protected media). Note, however, that a backup tool will probably cache (store) your backup password on your computer to automatically encrypt new and incremental backups. For this reason, make sure to have a truly unique, never reused password for encrypting backups.
Individual folders are frequently backed up using common archive tools such as WinZip, 7Zip or WinRar. All of these tools offer the ability to encrypt archives with a password. While the encryption strength is different among the three formats (ZIP, 7Z and RAR), an up to date version of each tool provides adequate protection if you choose a reasonably complex password (e.g. 8 characters or more, combining small and capital letters with numbers and special characters). To achieve the best level of protection, do keep those archives on BitLocker-protected media.
Note that password recovery tools work significantly faster on ZIP/7Z/RAR compared to attacking BitLocker encryption or Office 2013 (and newer) documents. For this reason, never reuse your password, and make sure that your BitLocker media, your documents and your backups/archives use very different passwords (ideally, not based on the same pattern).

Cloud security: OneDrive Personal Vault

Microsoft started offering an extra layer of security to all users of its cloud storage service in the form of a Personal Vault. OneDrive Personal Vault helps secure your files both on your computer and in the cloud in the event that someone gains access to your account or your device.
Unlike ransomware protection, Personal Vault is available to all users of Microsoft OneDrive and not just to Office 365 subscribers. Technically speaking, Personal Vault is an area in the OneDrive folder on your computer and in the OneDrive cloud storage that features additional protection. You can only access this protected area after passing a strong authentication. If your Microsoft Account is protected with two-factor authentication, you will have to pass the second step of identity verification in addition to typing your Microsoft Account password.
Once configured, Personal Vault must be manually unlocked every time you need access to secured data. To unlock, you must type in your Microsoft Account password and pass the second authentication step if your account has two-factor authentication. Once you’ve finished accessing the data, Personal Vault will automatically relock after a short period of inactivity. Once locked, any files you were using will also lock and require re-authentication to access.
Setting up Personal Vault only takes a few clicks as outlined in Protect your OneDrive files in Personal Vault.
OneDrive Personal Vault is still new; no independent security analysis has been performed until today. In our view, Personal Vault is worth consideration as an extra security layer for some of the most private but rarely accessed types of data. Examples of such data may include BitLocker escrow keys and binary encryption keys, or the list of passwords some users store in encrypted Excel spreadsheets. I personally keep my two-factor authentication secrets (scanned QR codes to initialize the Authenticator app) in the Vault as well.
  • Physical access: unknown (not yet analyzed)
  • Other users on the same computer: strong protection
  • Malware/ransomware: strong protection (unless Personal Vault is unlocked at the time malware is running)
  • Online attacks: as strong as your Microsoft Account security
  • Usage cases: activate to add an extra layer of security for a handful of personal documents, encryption keys, 2fa secrets etc.

Ransomware protection

One of the most important threats not covered by any encryption is the type of malware called ransomware. Ransomware is a type of malware that threatens to either publish the data stolen from the victim or perpetually block access to the victim’s files by encrypting them with a key that is only known to the attacker. The term ‘ransomware’ has emerged from the fact that, on many cases, attackers demand a ransom payment to decrypt data.
Protecting your data against ransomware is a complex topic in itself. However, computer users can choose one or both of the following two defences when it comes to ransomware protection.
Ransomware protection is effective against the following threats.
  • Physical access: no protection
  • Other users on the same computer: no protection
  • Malware/ransomware: effective protection
  • Online attacks: as strong as your cloud account security
  • Usage cases: available automatically to Office 365 subscribers. Available to paid Dropbox users. Automatically protects files stored in OneDrive/Dropbox. Automatic alerts (OneDrive only). Automatic restore (OneDrive only); manual restore (Dropbox).
Use cloud storage with automatic ransomware protection
If you are using Windows 10, most likely you already have a Microsoft Account. The Microsoft Account gives you access to OneDrive, Microsoft’s cloud storage solution. The free tier includes 5 to 15 GB of online storage, while Office 365 subscribers receive the whole terabyte of cloud storage.
Microsoft actively promotes OneDrive Ransomware Protection. OneDrive automatically detects when the files are mass-deleted or mass-edited (such as when ransomware encrypts the entire Documents folder), alerts the user and prompts to restore the known-good snapshot. The File Restore feature is only available to Office 365 subscribers (Home and Personal levels are enough to receive protection).
More information at Ransomware detection and recovering your files.
If you prefer Dropbox to Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox gets you covered against ransomware attacks, but mostly for higher-level paid tiers. Users of the free Basic tier as well as Plus subscribers can roll back individual encrypted files during the first 30 days after the attack (there will be no warning of mass-deletion of mass-encryption of files coming from the Dropbox app). If you want to roll back the entire Documents folder with Dropbox Rewind, you’ll need to be a paid Plus or Professional tier subscriber.

Make backup snapshots. Keep backup media offline
Once ransomware is installed on your computer, it will try to encrypt every document that is accessible. The obvious solution is making documents inaccessible by physically disconnecting backup media (such as using 2.5” portable USB drives to back up). In this scenario, you would only connect backup media to your computer when you actually want to make the backup, disconnecting the disk after the backup tool finishes its job. With this approach, even if your computer is attacked by ransomware, your offline backups will not be affected (unless you connected the external drive to the computer at the time the ransomware was installed).
In addition, configure your backup tool to keep snapshots of your data going back as long as permitted by available storage. In our office, an affordable 4TB USB hard drive can keep approximately 30 to 40 full snapshots of the Documents folder; this number becomes significantly larger if you enable incremental backups, with each snapshot saving only

2020.01.05 17:12 702b Why would a config/dot file create a .gnupg folder and a keyring file?

Hi i added a dotfile i found on the net for a program and it created a .gnupg folder with a keyring in the $HOME directory.
Why/how would it do this?
i looked through the files, and didn't find anything that would do this ...
EDIT: i probably did not give enough info, i installed a dotfile for vifm file manager, and it creates the above file/folder, i did read through the dotfiles, as i always do before using them ...
here is the dotfile in question, i removed the signature that was at the top (it also creates the files without the signature), as there is probably an innocent explanation (and i don't want to create any problems unnecessarily), i am just curious, and would like to understand/be sure what causes this behaviour
