2019.10.31 20:46 TheIPlayerLFC Chronicles, Part 1: Laying Foundations
These are the names of the players of Houlding who went to Anfield with McKenna, each with his boots: Ross; Hannah, McLean; Kelso, McQue, McBride; Miller, Wyllie, Smith, McVean, Kelvin. The attendance at Anfield numbered one hundred if at all. Houlding was all ready to lay down the ball. September 1st 1892 was the day it all began. Everton Football Club recently vacated the Anfield Road ground due to a dispute about the rent. Houlding, who later became Lord Mayor of Liverpool, was left with a football field but no club. Founding Everton Athletic, a team was quickly formed after manager John McKenna went on a scouting tour of Scotland. The FA did not approve of the name for the new team as they believed the team that left Anfield held the rights to the name thus the new team was renamed to Liverpool Football Club on June 3rd 1892. With the 1891/92 season closing it was time to register the new Liverpool Football Club to the Football League. Houlding decided to apply for the First Division rather than the Second division which opened that summer and so the application was rejected. The club then joined the Lancashire League playing one pre-season friendly before the league started. And so on the 1st of September 1892, Andrew Hannah led his "team of Macs" (nicknamed as such due to all the players being Scottish) in a blue and white kit out onto the field to face Rotherham Town. Starting as they meant to go on, Liverpool ended up with a 7-1 rout of Rotherham, and go on is exactly what they did. Liverpool started their first league campaign with an 8-0 thumping of Higher Walton in front of 200 fans in attendance at Anfield. Among them was the Secretary-Manager William Edward Barclay, in charge of the administrative side. Liverpool continued on winning for 3 more games before being handed their first loss away to Blackpool losing 3-0. Liverpool suffered their 2nd loss of the season and first ever loss at Anfield in gameweek 9, again to Blackpool, losing 0-2. Despite this liverpool were a force to be reckoned with, leading the league and ready to take on opponents in other competitions. Liverpool entered the oldest cup competition in the world, the FA Cup, in the 1st qualifying round and successfully navigated the first 2 rounds against Nantwich and Newton but fell in the 3rd qualifying round to Northwich Victoria. Liverpool also entered 2 regional cup competitions. Liverpool progressed through 3 matches of the Lancashire Senior Cup before losing in the 2nd round to Bootle. With attendances soaring and plenty of wins Liverpool Football Club were flying high. They were flying so high in fact that at the first time of asking they won the league. They clinched the title in the last game of the 22 game season. With 66 points they beat Blackpool to the title on goal average. Just a week later and Liverpool were playing in their first final. The Liverpool Senior Cup was a short one, but one Liverpool controlled that year. Beating Chester 4-0 at Anfield, they got their revenge on Bootle in the semis in front of a 5,000 man crowd. Liverpool learned that in the final, they would contest Everton in the first Merseyside Derby. April 22nd was the date, Hawthorne Road, Bootle the venue. Liverpool were getting ready to play in front of 10,000 people, their most watched game yet. The game was an intense and close affair; the only goal coming from a fast, low shot from Tom Wyllie. In the dying embers of the game Everton were denied a penalty and a dropped ball was awarded but the whistle blew shortly after. Liverpool Football Club won the game but the Liverpool Football Association convened the day after to discuss Everton's protest. Everton's appeal was dismissed and a day later, April 24th, Liverpool Football Club were officially presented with the Liverpool Senior Cup. Liverpool had just won their first double. The rivalry had begun. With the season over Chairman John Houlding decided to reapply to the Football League. With the Second Division expanding Liverpool were admitted. Liverpool were coming off a double in their first season and into a fresh new challenge. How would they cope? LFC All time stats Players: 20 Managers: 2 Wins: 19 Draws: 2 Losses: 4 Max home attendance: 8,000 Max attendance: 10,000 Trophies: 1 Goals scored: 80 Goals conceded: 21
